I come from a family of travelers and spent my early years in all corners of the globe. My childhood was split between Tanzania, East Africa and Lake Placid, New York. After that I spent time in Bridgehampton, New York, Seattle, Washington, and American Samoa. Eventually I returned to New York, and after a brief period in Australia in 1988, I realized that building custom homes was what I wanted to do.

That year I began an apprenticeship with one of the finest custom home builders on eastern Long Island. I gained valuable experience working on several historic renovations and high-end seaside custom homes. Five years later I decided to become an independent contractor and start my own construction company. Shortly after I made that decision, Hurricane Hugo ravaged the Caribbean and virtually destroyed the island of St. Croix. I had an interest in learning new construction techniques so I secured a Contractor’s license for the US Virgin Islands and moved to Christiansted, St. Croix. For the next three years my crew and I worked alongside some very talented Subcontractors, as we rebuilt over 30 homes destroyed by the hurricane.

As reconstruction in St. Croix reached its end, I was ready for a new challenge and on a friend’s recommendation, I moved to Telluride in the fall of 1992. I took a supervisory position with Mountain Village Construction and led the crew that built the Plaza Building that houses the Ski Area offices and several of the highest end residences in the Mountain Village core.

Two years later I accepted a position as Project Manager with Mclean / Maddock and oversaw the construction of five high end custom homes and the development of “Lodges on Sundance”, an 18 unit $11,000,000 log town home project. I spent seven years learning how to address the challenges of high alpine construction working with some of the best in the business. Finally, I made the decision to start a construction company of my own in Telluride. In the spring of 1999 Hoins Construction Inc. was launched.

Since then I have completed 32 custom home projects in the Telluride region. One project, “200 South Oak”, was awarded 1st place from the Town of Telluride for Historic Renovation in 2011.

My experience in custom construction spans more than three decades, 20 years in the Telluride region alone. In that time I have assembled the finest team of Sub contractors and suppliers to meet the highest expectations of the most discerning clients.
